Edna M. Arellano

d. April 29, 2012

Edna Moyeda Arellano September 2, 1926 –April 29, 2012 passed away at home at the age of 85. Edna was born Edna Cruz Moyeda in San Antonio, Texas. She was the third of four children. As a young girl her family moved to Mexico where she lived in Monterrey, Saltillo and Juarez. There she developed a great love of her parents’ homeland. While living in Juarez, Edna met her future husband Abel Carlos Arellano a neighbor who she was teaching English. The young couple moved to Bakersfield where they started their family. The mother of 4, Edna was devoted to her children. She simply adored them and was happy to sacrifice what she could for them but raised them with a firm hand teaching them to be both respectful and productive citizens. She was a champion of the abused and served as a neighborhood activist to battered and abused women. She could often be found accompanying neighborhood women acting as interpreter helping to seek redress for abuses that had been suffered. These acts of kindness didn’t endear her to many of the men in the neighborhood where she lived. Edna worked as a teacher’s aide for the Bakersfield School District while her children attended school and later was the owner of a janitorial business. She was a tireless worker who was loved by the clients that she served. A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Edna was a devoted Christian who volunteered many hours to the congregations where she attended. She especially loved her membership in the Relief Society where she served for many years as a Visiting Teaching supervisor. Edna is survived by her husband Abel Carlos Arellano, children Miriam Mayberry, Beatriz Rodier, Eduardo Arellano, Victor Arellano and their spouses, brother Benjamin Moyeda and 17 grandchildren. Viewing will be held May 4th at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1903 Bernard st. Services starting at 11 a.m. with a burial at Greenlawn Cemetery River Blvd . Eternal Light Lawn.
